Worried by the continuous rise in the unemployment rate in
Nigeria, a group of concerned Nigerians has come up with an idea of bridging
the gap between the industry and the classroom saying this will further open
many to gainful employment and other opportunities.
Speaking at a media briefing on Education, Nexus, Industry, Project,
(ENIPRO), the Convener, Jesse Ogabu stated that the essence of the initiative
is to transform the lives of young people through recruitment opportunities as
well as creating a foundation through the newly designed academy which will
help reposition our youth and make them industry friendly.
“Today, information Technology has taken over the industry
creating opportunities for only those who are ready to add value to the
industry which gave birth to the theme of discussion for the proposed 2.0
Enipro Summit which is Workplace/classroom: The future of work, local content, an
inclusive strategy scheduled to hold on the 11th of April at the
University of Lagos Main Auditorium”,Ogabu noted.
The summit will have in Attendance Prof. Pat Utomi, Fatai
Folarin, Tope Fasua and a host of other captains of industry while Jobber-man and
Poise Nigeria had also shown interest by creating opportunities for recruitment
as well as polishing institute for graduates who still needs to learn the
industry language.
The head of Enipro Academy, Afolakemi Ogunnusi stated that
job place is a translation of what is learnt in the classroom which many youths
today finds it difficult to effectively replicate explaining that enipro
Academy has come up with solutions to effectively tackle that by putting our
young graduates back on the right track.
She also advise Students, Graduates, Corps members and
Unemployed youths to take advantage of the initiatives and launch into a world
of opportunities
As part of efforts to
ensure active participation of Education Stakeholders towards the Success of
the Universal Basic Education, (UBE), the Human Development Initiative, (HDI),
a Non-Governmental Organization which monitors Educational Projects with the
support of Mac Arthur Foundation had organized an Education Summit at Ibeju-Lekki
LCDA in Lagos to provide participants with knowledge on contents of the Lagos
State SUBEB Action plan.
The Executive Director, Mrs.
Funso Owasonoye, in her welcome remark noted that the project was to ensure
that children roaming about the street return to School adding that this can be
achieved with the cooperation and support of all Stakeholders. She enjoined
participants to take advantage of the Summit and replicate same in their
various communities as well as monitor UBE Projects within their community and
report any misdemeanor.
The facilitators at the
event, Mr. Ibidapo Johnson and Mrs. Bolanle Dare spoke on ‘The free and
Compulsory UBE Act(2004) and Stakeholders ‘ role in the UBE programme respectively
noting that UBE is a nine year free compulsory
and continuous programme for every child saying that UBE is free thereby
no school administrator should charge sundry fees.
On the role of
Stakeholders, the speaker stressed the need for all stakeholders to jointly
monitor and help sustain facilities provided for the benefit of the children
noting that it is the duty of everyone to see every child roaming the street as
their child and be willing to challenge them anytime.
One of the participants,Mrs. Ebun Adegun stated in an interview described the training as timely and essential adding that all issues treated at the workshop will be acted upon on getting back to their respective Schools and Communities.

The leadership of ASUU noted that the strike was informed by the poor funding of the nation’s universities and staff remuneration. The strike which began on November 5 had rendered many academic activities useless while many students are forced to sit at home.
According to an information emanating from the office of the Minister of Labour and Productivity said the Meeting will commence at 4pm to discuss and likely call of the strike.

Every December 1
is known as World Aids Day across the globe. Ahead of this year celebration,
the theme for the year 2018 World Aids Day is“Do you know your Status”? How
many people actually know their status? In
Nigeria, the 2005 HIV/AIDS/syphilis sentinel survey show that 4.4% are living
with HIV/AIDS of the total adult population aged 15-49 years who are still
sexually active. The sentinel survey was compiled from data collected at
antenatal clinics across the country. The Median HIV/ AIDS prevalence among
antenatal clinics has leveled off at around 4% according to FMOH report.
However, such a report is a guideline and cannot be considered conclusive as most
Nigerian mothers do not deliver in clinics and not all of them do allow themselves
to be tested for HIV/AIDS according to another report.
Research from UNAIDS
Report on the Global HIV/AIDS Epidemic 2002 has it that Nigeria has the third
largest global number of people living with HIV/AIDS with an estimated number
of between 1.7 million- 4.2 million after India and South Africa and this has
not changed. Countries of the world have been responding to the challenges of
HIV/AIDS through various awareness campaigns to sensitize her nationals on
meaning, mode of spread as well as prevention of the infection. Also, the media
have played a pivotal role in the fight against HIV/AIDS. In 2004, Global Media
AIDS Initiative affirmed that education is the vaccine against HIV/AIDS.
In Africa,
millions of people, especially the youths do not comprehend this disease full
impact, how it is contracted and how to arm oneself against it, therefore
become imperative. HIV/AIDS which may be contracted through unprotected sex,
sharing of sharp objects and a host of others but more importantly, HIV/AIDS
has no cure as prevention appears as the only viable option.
Therefore many
media organizations are now rising to the challenge by promoting awareness of
HIV/AIDS and educating the general public on its control while lot of
researches had been on-going on drugs that could prevent contracting the
ailment before sex and also after which is the PEP (Post Exposure Prophylaxis)
and PREP (Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis) which is not available in Nigeria.
The strength of
media in influencing people’s perception as well as making society to change
their behavior may be an essential tool for fighting medical and social problem
such as HIV/AIDS. In other words, the media could be used to successfully
advocate for behavioral and attitudinal change and more specifically addressing
people living with HIV/AIDS in order to prevent stigmatization as well as
discrimination against the infected and affected persons.
It is in
realization of this fact that many nations of the world are using the annual
Worlds Aids programme to further advance the course of propagating the gospel of HIV/AIDS as well as removing
Nigeria’s name from the list of the country with more history of HIV/AIDS as
well as provide alternative for the control through the use of Condom for
protection as well as other ways of contracting it not forgetting the role of
the media especially airing of programmes relating to HIV/AIDS education and
prevention.
Though, there
has been pervasive lack of awareness of and knowledge about HIV/AIDS despite
its high prevalence, yet, it is important we all join hands together to fight
this menace by leading by example which is to first Know our status after then
we encourage others to follow suit.
By so doing, Nigeria
will sing a new song as far as HIV/AIDS is concerned.

The Director General of National Agency for the Control of Aids (NACA), Dr. Sanni Aliyu has disclosed that 17,000 persons, including, 800 pregnant women, are currently on Anti-Retroviral treatment in Ogun State, hinting that, the Ongoing aids Indicator survey will lasts for six months revealed this and would cut across the 36 States of the federation, as well as the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja.
The DG, has lauded efforts of the Ogun State government on efficient health care delivery, particular, its commitment to the ongoing Nigeria Aids Indicator and Impact Survey (NAIIS) in the state.
He revealed that, all the Local Government Areas (LGAs) in the State had been covered, noting that, 112 Enumerated Areas (EAs), which represent about 90 percent of the total EAs were also covered.
While welcoming the team, the commissioner for health, represented by the Permanent Secretary, Dr. Nafiu Aigoro, appreciated Federal government’s concern for the wellbeing of the people, saying the State government would not relent in its efforts at providing adequate health care for its citizenry.
Dr. Aliyu who gave the commendation while briefing the press in Abeokuta, said that the exercise has yielded positive results, as there was massive turnout of citizens for the programme.
"I want to say a big thank you, for helping the Federal government to achieve the aim of defining the HIV epidemic more clearly in the country”, he remarked.
Stressing the importance of the survey, Aliyu said, it would give Federal government the opportunity to know the numbers of people living with the virus and also provide adequate information on how to improve on the quality of HIV treatment and other services in the country.
He added that, it was important for citizens to know their HIV status, as this would help to minimize its spread, and assist Federal government in providing adequate drugs, care and treatment for those infected.
HIV Epidemic is a deadly
disease if not treated, might lead to loss of life. Nigeria has the second
largest number of people living with HIV.
This epidemic varies widely and is common among young people between the
ages of 15-45 and more predominate among sex workers. Youth and young adults in
Nigeria are particularly vulnerable to HIV, with young women at higher risk
than young men. There are many risk factors that contribute to the spread of HIV
which includes prostitution, sharing of blades, high related sexually
transmitted diseases and a host of others.
Many years back, the federal
ministry of health stood its ground to fight the menace by establishing a
special department called national Action Committee on HIV/AIDS which also
mandated all the State Ministry of health to have state action committee on
HIV/AIDS to launch various advocacy on how to curb the spread. Late 2016, there
was vigorous campaign on use of condom to prevent HIV/AIDS and many non-governmental
organisation also joined in the advocacy.
Since then, activities on
HIV advocacy had been at its lowest ebb while departments saddled with the
responsibility have been idle for quite sometimes due to the government uncaring
attitude to curbing the menace.
In most countries of the
word, PrEP drug had been introduced as a pre and post drug in order to avoid
contracting HIV from sexual partners. In Nigeria, Prep is visible but with
small presence while there is still need for an operation scale up prep has
proposed by Tosin Adesile, founder of Africa Youth Circle and Current
Secretary, National Youth network on HIV/AIDS, Ogun State branch.
It is my opinion that
governments at all level will awake from its slumber and link up with
international partners to get Nigeria away from the second positions of countries
with the highest number of people with HIV and advance to safe health regions.
An accident has occurred along
Abeokuta-Sagamu expressway earlier today around 10:40pm involving a green Toyota
Camry vehicle loaded with rice and a silver Toyota camry pencil around Kobape
killing the two drivers.

with green colour loaded with rice was being pursued by the officers of
Nigerian Custom officers with sporadic gunshots while the driver continued to

President Muhammadu Buhari has set up an
inter-agency Presidential Committee on Asset Recovery as part of the
efforts to strengthen the ongoing fight against corruption. The
committee is headed by the Vice President, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo.
Minister of Information and Culture,
Alhaji Lai Mohammed, disclosed this when he received the Special
Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General for West Africa,

The Gospel Musicians Association of Nigeria, (GOMAN) have
elected a new leader to steer the activities of the organisation for the next
three years.
Evangelist Funmi Aragbaiye at its 2016 national elections
emerged as the new President for the association after defeating the two other
candidates, Evangelist Philip Olayiwola and Rev karis Ekpeyong with double of
their votes.
The emergence of Fumi
Aragbaiye signalled the end of the tenure of Evangelist Timi Osunkoya popularly
known as Telemi now Orokoya three year single tenure as president.
In an interview with
the popular Artiste, Funmi Aragbaiye, she thanked the almighty for making her
witnessing the day after lots of call to serve the association which she
earlier rejected. She attributed her success to God and progressive GOMAN
members.
According to her,” I am going to work with everybody
including the candidates that lost. By God’s grace, one of our agenda is to get
a befitting secretariat for the association with the help of God”.
The Chairman of the GOMANEC election with the responsibility
of conducting election in various officers in the association, Pastor
Oluwaseun Oluwatunmbi said we have never
had it so good like this in the association for a long time. Before it was
selection, now it was a real contested election which had a clear winner.
Evangelist Lanre teriba also emerged as deputy west while Hon
Paul Ayodele North and Pst. Gabriel ibikunle as the new General Secretary.
The event was well attended by State branches while many attributed the success of
the new Presidents at the polls to her
many years of dedication to the work of God in the area of song ministration
and her will to move the association forward.

Leicester have completed the signing of Nigerian international Ahmed Musa from CSKA Moscow on a four-year deal for £16 million.

The strike by the Petroleum and
Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria continues which had reduced
loading activities at depots in Apapa, Lagos, raising fear as to another round of scarcity.
It is the hope of many Nigeria that despite the exorbitant new fuel price,Federal Government will not try anything funny which can lead to a total shutdown.
PENGASSAN, which embarked on the
nationwide strike on Thursday, had said it would begin a gradual
withdrawal of its members from oil and gas fields and platforms by next
week.
A statement by the association’s
National Public Relations Officer, Mr. Emmanuel Ojugbana, on Friday
noted that there was total compliance by their members to the directive
to embark on an indefinite strike. He said the strike was not only about
the members of the association but also about the survival of the
nation’s oil and gas industry.
But the new Group Managing Director,
Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, Mr. Maikanti Baru, assured that
the corporation would ensure that the country does not face another
round of petrol scarcity.
Baru and the Minister of State for
Petroleum Resources, Dr. Ibe Kachikwu, told journalists in Abuja that
they met with members of the oil union on Friday in a bid to end the
strike, expressing hopes that the strike would be called off and would
not cause scarcity.
